Welcome to Year 2

Key Stage 1 is the first key stage of primary school, for 5-7-year-old children in England, and it is made up of Year 1 and Year 2. Year 2 is an exciting year for our children as they continue their learning at Brindishe Schools and are now the oldest in the Key Stage 1 phase.

At Brindishe Schools, we have developed a curriculum overview for each year group which details the focus for each subject in each half term. Please click on the Year 2 curriculum overview below to find out more:

Year 2 CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Phonics, reading and writing

The children will continue to have a daily phonics session following the Bug Club phonics programme. We want our children in Year 2 to develop a love of reading and become increasingly fluent with growing comprehension skills. The children will also have lots of opportunities to write across a range of genres, learn some more unusual spelling patterns and extend their vocabulary as well as their awareness of grammar and punctuation for writing.

You can also find out more about how we teach Phonics, as well as early reading and writing, in the videos below.

Maths

In Year 2, the children continue to develop their counting and calculation skills and also extend their understanding of fractions. They will measure length, weight, volume, temperature, time and money, discover more about 2D and 3D shapes, and begin to learn about statistics. Much of the learning will come from exploring with objects to explore problems practically as well as through mental and written methods. Maths in Year 2 focuses on the 2, 5, and 10 times tables, and the children will learn multiplication and division facts for these tables.
